Canon PowerShot S95 with 10 MP

A Compact Camera

Canons new Canon PowerShot S95 is a 10.0 megapixel camera that is the smallest of the PowerShot S series yet and is loaded with technology so smart it could probably take flawless photos without even needing a person to hold it. In fact, Canon has created a canon that will follow your every command like a faithful dog, use its intuition to take the perfect photo at just the click of a button, or anything in-between.

The Body
Canon has kept the PowerShot S95 small, at 100 x 58 mm height and width and 30mm depth, giving it a weight of just over 190grams. It’s a good looking camera and well designed, with a 3 inch LCD screen on the back to show you whether your latest photography experiment has turned out how you wanted it to. The PowerShot S95’s wide angle lens is 28mm and is equipped with 3.8x zoom and the Hybrid Image Stabilizer eliminates any blurring that may be caused by the movement of your hands.Canon PowerShot S95 with 10 MP

The All-Powerful Control Ring
With a jaunty little click that serves no purpose but is nice to hear nonetheless, the control ring lets you play around with a variety of settings on the S95 to get the perfect picture. Exposure, aperture, focus and shutter speed are a few of the options available to play with, and if that all sounds a bit too complicated for you, the S95 offers a Smart Auto function that does all the work for you. Tracking AF will lock onto moving targets and focus on them if your subject isn’t stationary.

Shooting In The Dark
The PowerShot S90 prided itself on being one of the best cameras for shooting in low level lightCanon PowerShot S95 with 10 MP2 around, and Canon is determined to keep that title in the family with the S95. A high-sensitivity 10.0 megapixel CCD sensor in combination with DIGIC 4 processing allows you to shoot excellent pictures in the dark and shady areas and the Control Ring allows you to fiddle with the ISO. Up to 3200 ISO is possible without losing any mega pixels but if you don’t mind a little reduction in quality you can change to ‘Low Light Mode’ which will take between 320 and 1200 ISO. All this lets you shoot without using flash and flooding your carefully composed picture with light, which is perfect if you’re trying to capture a scene exactly as you can see it.

The Verdict
The Canon PowerShot S95 has so many modes and settings that you’re unlikely to use all of them – even if you’re such an experienced photographer (or you’ve simply poured over the handbook for too long) that you know exactly what they do, but it’s that freedom that makes it so powerful. If you set it in Smart Auto and let it do its stuff, it uses a whole host of settings and adjustments that you’ve probably never heard of and even has settings that takes several pictures with different exposures and merges them into one to ensure it’s getting the best of its subject. Alternatively, if you’re like me and you like to have a camera that is still teaching you new techniques several months down the line, the PowerShot S95 has no end of tricks up its sleeve.
